This fifth series has been an aberration, a strange, diffuse thing, albeit one with occasional shards of piercing emotion. But in tonight’s finale we see a glimpse of the Mad Men of old.
There is a sense that the slate has been wiped clean at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce after last week’s tragedy and everyone is moving on and up. Don Draper, prosperous and self-assured, doles out largesse to his child(ish)-bride Megan while haunted by a face from his past. There’s a cheeky montage featuring a classic James Bond theme and the most wonderful final shot that will leave you smiling for days, secure in the knowledge that the Don we once knew is back. After an unsatisfactory series, it’s enough to make you fall in love with Mad Men all over again.
About this programme
13/13. Buoyed by the agency's recent successes, the partners consider expanding the office onto a second floor, though Don is preoccupied with a health issue. Megan has much to ponder when one of her fellow actresses asks for Don's help in getting a role in an advert, while Roger has an unexpected reunion and Pete discovers the consequences of his actions.
