“William has now come to terms with duty and his destiny,” the narration on this clip-umentary tells us confidently. To which the only answer is: “Has he? How do you know?”
It’s one of several moments where people pronounce with complete certainty, as royal-watchers do, on the royals’ private states of mind (“I think he blossomed at Eton”) larded with dollops of hearsay, rumour, embroidery and downright invention. You’ll lose count of how often we’re told about William’s desire to be a normal guy. But it’s still an extraordinary story of a unique life. Look out for the bodyguard quoting William, aged four, saying,
“I don’t like ‘tographers!”
