The Queen and I

Episode 2

The Queen and I
Radio Times
Review by:

There are touching and evocative scenes among this week’s home movies about the Queen. Nothing calls up a sense of the past like the shaky framing and faded colours of old Super-8. Sadly, the programme-makers don’t trust their own material so they ladle on a backwash of sentimental music to make sure we get the emotional point.

The result is like a delicate 1970s cheesecake drowned in strawberry syrup, but we can still enjoy the wonderful shots of the 1977 jubilee celebrations, with their tugs of war, sack races and suburban congas.

We also see a brilliant clip of the 20-something Queen on her first official overseas visit with sailors on the deck of HMS Vanguard. She’s playing “It”.
