A Californian honky-tonk trio is the unlikely starting point for this three-part punkumentary. Nevertheless, Eggs over Easy was the group who kindled the pub rock scene that then fed into the studded, glue-haired beast of legend.
The energy of protopunksters like Ducks Deluxe and Ian Dury’s first band Kilburn and the High Roads was another vital ingredient. But it was a UK visit by the New York Dolls that lit the powder of punk. Glen Matlock, Mick Jones and other sultans of the safety pin reflect on crazy days in this satisfying first part, though Richard Strange of the Doctors of Madness is the most succinct: “It was much better than music,” he says. “It was something to upset your parents.”
