He’s a veteran reggae DJ, well-versed in the genre’s rich history and revered by the industry’s top musicians and producers. Between spinning 60s rocksteady, ska and dancehall records DJ Derek delivers wisdom in a thick Jamaican Patois. But get this: Derek Serpell-Morris is also a white, bespectacled 70-year-old — a retired accountant who is known to enjoy a good cardigan.
Initially sceptical of this bizarre character, poet Miles Chambers delves into the Bristolian hero’s history. He candidly uncovers the story of Derek’s immersion in black culture at a time of immense racial tensions, exploring how, ultimately, reggae helped to illuminate his life.
