Remember Libya? Nine months after rebels overthrew Gaddafi’s dictatorship (with help from western governments and Nato air strikes) the oil-rich country is still awaiting elections.
Daily Telegraph columnist Peter Oborne travels around Libya and finds a chaotic patchwork of factions and militias. He witnesses a failed attempt by police to break up an armed roadblock and meets fighters who have controlled the country’s main airport since they seized it from Gaddafi’s forces: talks with the government have broken down. He also uncovers disturbing evidence of torture and extortion by the armed brigades. Peace and the rule of law remain a long way off.
About this programme
Reporter Peter Oborne and director Richard Cookson travel to Libya, where they learn the country has struggled with lawlessness since being freed from Colonel Gaddafi's dictatorship during the Arab Spring. They reveal how armed groups responsible for overthrowing the old regime are clinging on to territory and power.
