Series 1 - Episode 3

Be careful how you watch this. As the best documentaries do, Michael Apted’s masterpiece has a way of repeating on you. A day or two later parts of it will bubble into your consciousness – moments or images or things people said. Apted’s shooting style is simple but the ordinariness of it can make it piercing. As when Lynn, the librarian badly affected by government cuts, talks about the consolations of her marriage: “Thirty seven years. Gone extremely quickly. We’ve just grown together.” Or when cabbie Tony insists, “I’m very, very lucky, Michael.”
