“It’s devastating how a good day can turn out so bad,” says the sister of a patient called Trudy. The pair went out to celebrate Trudy’s promotion, drank a fair bit, and Trudy (49) fell down some stairs, fracturing her skull. Now the question for the trauma team at King’s is whether her brain is also injured, and if so, how badly.
The idea that one moment of bad luck or bad judgement can be life-changing is one this series keeps repeating. “You don’t have to be base jumping or rock climbing to put yourself at risk,” a trauma consultant reflects.
Also on the clipboard tonight are two serious teenage stabbings. The hospital has treated 35 stab victims in the previous month.
