Brian (Alun Armstrong) seems to have beaten the bottle at last and opted for an obsession with oranges. He hears a tale from an ex-squaddie who lost a friend on the eve of the first Gulf War, thanks to a secret army medical lab where soldiers were used as guinea pigs.
That sets up a nicely high-stakes investigation for this 2008 season finale, in which the full might of the security services, the MoD and the Army is ranged against our leather-faced coppers. But look out, they’re dangerous when roused, as Jack’s vein-popping, four-letter shouting match with a colonel shows. It makes you wish they’d let James Bolam off the leash more often.
About this programme
8/8. Jack and Strickland form an unlikely alliance that sees them break the rules to find out why a British soldier died while taking part in a Ministry of Defence medical trial. With three of the man's colleagues now suffering from psychological, drink or memory problems, the team considers whether he died as a result of the experiment, or if he was a victim of an Army cover-up.
