As soon as we hear that familiar Andrew Lloyd Webber theme tune, we know we’re in safe hands, and indeed Melvyn Bragg’s profile of National Theatre artistic director Nicholas Hytner proves that The South Bank Show has lost nothing in its transfer to Sky Arts. It’s a typically thorough job, taking in Hytner’s formative years and creative influences before ending with a look at the man at work. And it’s here – as we see Hytner refining hit show One Man, Two Guvnors for its Broadway run – that we learn most about his methods.
