Oxford professor Miranda Thornton is found dead in her bedroom, clutching a newspaper article about a wealthy businessman who is proposing to buy up much of her college’s land for housing development. It’s all a bit odd, but as she was desperately lonely and deeply embarrassed that her revealing online dating video had been put onto a subversive media blog, it’s initially assumed that she committed suicide.
Fresh from an uncharacteristic action-man arrest that has dramatically raised their profile in the press, Lewis and Hathaway politely investigate the death anyway. They discover that not only are there a lot of rude, arrogant people in Oxford who have no respect for the law, but also that – shock, horror – the media can be disrespectful, too.
With luck, learning about the deceased professor’s empty life will encourage Lewis to approach pathologist Dr Hobson before new-cop-on-the-block DI Peterson (Jason Durr) beats him to it.
