“If I want a friend, I’ll get a dog,” warns Lord Sugar at the start of each episode. It suggests a slant to his social life you wouldn’t expect, but the point is that niceness only gets you so far here. Last year’s winner, Tom, may have been the nicest candidate ever, but he also had a business brain on him. The right blend of charm and nous is certainly called for in this episode’s task, a gripping challenge in a series that has been full of them: landing discounts for an up-market website.
It’s all here: hubris, flailing arithmetic and running along pavements as a deadline looms. Marvellous.
About this programme
10/12. After the drama of last week, which saw Jenna out and Stephen challenged to prove himself as project manager on this task, the teams represent an internet company that offers Londoners cheap deals on hotels, beauty treatments, posh dinners and premium products. In a test of the candidates' negotiation skills, they have just one day to find great products and services, agree on a good discount and get their offers to the website by 7pm that same evening. But with such a tight deadline, the hopefuls soon become desperate to deliver quality at the right price - which could prove costly in the boardroom.
