Fine-dining French restaurant Tarragon in East Sussex is often empty, even on a Saturday, perhaps because the pretentious menu concocted by chef John Cameron (or Jean George, as he likes to be called) doesn’t sit comfortably in what is essentially a family pub by a busy roundabout.
Unfortunately, although John is discontented he’s also stubborn and refuses to admit they’ve got it wrong. Owner Nigel lacks conviction, bending to the prevailing view. Fernando Peire has a heck of a battle persuading John to ditch les cuisses de grenouilles for simpler fare and getting Nigel to find his backbone. But Fernando always wins.
About this programme
4/6. Fernando Peire visits Tarragon, a fine-dining French restaurant in East Sussex that is failing fast - much to the frustration of first-time restaurateur Nigel Fright and award-winning chef John Cameron. The undercover troubleshooter believes the eatery needs to forget its continental pretensions and play it straight - and at the same time change its name and decor. But can he persuade the owner that frogs' legs and snails need to go?
