The body of 29-year-old Niall is found in a skip near Portsmouth dock. He’d been stabbed, DCI Vera Stanhope discovers, on a pedestrian bridge, but fell onto a passing lorry. While his death is complicated (he didn’t die from the stabbing for starters), his life is even more complex. His possessive mother (Phyllis Logan) knows more than she’s letting on, but as Vera peels back the layers of his various relationships, she finds others that are equally suspicious.
Sifting the evidence, Vera is also forced to examine her own relationship with her late dad, only to be confronted with a potentially life-changing discovery about her family.
About this programme
4/4. The investigation into the murder of 29-year-old Niall is made difficult by those closest to him, who seem intent on obscuring the facts, and it is not until the body of a drug dealer washes up on a beach that the dreadful truth begins to emerge. While coping with revelations of her own, Vera sifts through evidence of the grief, love and addiction that characterised Niall's life as she tries to find out why someone wanted him dead. With Judy Parfitt (Call the Midwife) and Phyllis Logan (Downton Abbey). Last in the series.
