Series 1 - 5. Let's Be Bad

Radio Times
Review by:
Patrick Mulkern

It’s liaisons à gogo tonight as leading man Michael pursues songwriter Julia, serenading her on her brownstone stoop, while fellow scribe Tom hits the sheets with lawyer John and both end up breathless with mirth. Director Derek humiliates Ivy in rehearsals, so she, in turn, snaps like a bitch supreme to the lovely Karen.

Ivy (Megan Hilty) may be an unlovable star but there’s no denying she’s terrific as a doped-up Marilyn Monroe in a new, fully staged production number, Let’s Be Bad. It’s Karen, though, who delivers the showstopper. Inspired to unleash her sexuality by gentle boyfriend Dev (Raza Jaffrey so different from Zafar, the role he played in Spooks), she sings James Brown’s It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World alone to herself while disrobing in front of her mirror. And Katharine McPhee’s voice is, as ever, achingly beautiful.
