Contaldo and Carluccio aren’t sociologists, but they are willing to eat horse testicles. This goes further than you might think towards an examination of the supposed crisis of masculinity in contemporary Italy. Where has all the machismo gone?
The friends head towards Rome and meet a man in a horse butcher’s shop. He’s on his fifth wife and swears by the power of specialist equine offal. Would our two like to come round and try them for lunch? His wife — of course — is cooking. But in town old-style roles aren’t so clear.
Divorced dads are learning to cook so they can feed their children properly, men are gym bunnies, and an earnest chef serves dishes which Antonio regards as “sissy”. It’s a confusing business examined
in a warm, old-fashioned way.
About this programme
4/4. Chefs Antonio Carluccio and Gennaro Contaldo compare the traditional role of men in the mountain villages of Lazio to that of their counterparts in Rome. In the capital, the duo find that the masculine model of their youth is outworn, and discover that men are now willing to take on chores that were once considered outside their domain - including cooking. Featuring recipes for braised beef in red wine, sweet pepper omelette and bucatini pasta with bacon and chilli.
