Now the five semi-finalists have to be whittled down to three for tomorrow’s final. RT can’t name the percussion winner, but you’ll know the four other talents already.
Judges praised pianist Yuanfan Yang for the “greatest sense of joy in communicating what he felt about the music”; cellist Laura Van Der Heijden faultlessly “inhabited every piece she played”; bass trombonist Alexander Kelly had “a generous sound, never compromising tonal quality”; and Charlotte Barbour-Condini “captivated with an ethereal sound” from her humble recorder.
About this programme
The winners of the keyboard, brass, strings, woodwind and percussion categories enter the semi-final, where they perform to determine which three will reach the last stage of the contest, as judged by composer Tansy Davies, pianist Huw Watkins, Sinfonia Cymru conductor Gareth Jones and Marshall Marcus, director of the London Southbank Centre's Sistema programme. Presenter Clemency Burton-Hill also goes behind the scenes at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama to profile the musicians who have made it this far.
