A year of anticipation finally pays off for one talented individual as the biennial competition moves from Cardiff to the Sage Gateshead for the final, recorded just a few hours earlier. Each of the three finalists must play a full concerto with the Northern Sinfonia under Ukrainian conductor Kirill Karabits.
The winner bags a trophy, £2,000 and the support of a two-year scheme paid for by the BBC and run by the Young Concert Artists Trust.
Also, 2010 winner Lara Melda returns to play a movement from Rachmaninov’s much-loved Piano Concerto No 2.
