Radio 2 darling she might be, but there’s always been a lot more to Pakistan-born singer/songwriter Rumer than chocolate vowels and tasteful arrangements. Take her new LP: it contains a cover of Jimmy Webb’s gorgeous curio PF Sloan, which the master songwriter recorded himself in 1970. Webb is on hand to help Rumer sing it here.
Certain to be bending Webb’s ear after the show is Kevin Rowland, who is back under the Dexys banner for the first time since 1985. The new sound is restrained, velvet-lined soul, but Rowland’s words are more fiery than ever.
Also in Jools’s circus of virtuosity are Devon-based troubadour Ben Howard, whose acoustic guitar work should be impressive; Hot Chip; and a major treat for folk aficionados in the form of June Tabor and Oysterband.
