Miss Marple

Series 1 - 1. The Body in the Library

After appearing on stage in an adaptation of Appointment with Death, Joan Hickson received a note from Agatha Christie that read, “I hope one day you will play my dear Miss Marple.”

Thirty-eight years later, she made her debut as the spinster sleuth in what are still the definitive adaptations of those classic whodunnits. Today, we have that first case from 1984, in which a dead body is found at Gossington Hall (“A platinum blonde! In Dolly Bantry’s library!”) in the village of St Mary Mead. As ever, Miss Marple soon comes to outwit the cloddish Chief Inspector Slack, who more than lives up to his name.
