Not the most probing UW film ever, but a weird glimpse of life in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Reporter Seyi Rhodes enters the bizarre world of professional wrestling in Kinshasa. Bouts take place in the street and are madly unconvincing even by the standards of the sport, but attract huge crowds. And this isn’t just showbiz: the pro-wrestling circus shades over into real political violence and the street gangs known as “kuluna”.
It’s an impressionistic film on a story that is crying out for a visit by Louis Theroux. He’d get mileage from the fighter called Zombi – and his deprived neighbourhood, the Kingdom of Zombi.
