Tim Minchin isn’t just a comic, musician and composer, he’s also an atheist. When asked if he’s going to take a Bible with him to the island, he points out that he can’t understand our fascination with everlasting life when we struggle with how to fill a Saturday afternoon.
There’s plenty of wit like this bouncing off the studio walls, but there are also moments of gentleness. Minchin confesses that he’s told his children that Father Christmas exists (which, of course, he does), despite his views on organised religion.
And there’s an epiphany of emotional vulnerability when he recalls having to walk on to an Edinburgh stage to perform the very same act that had won him an absolute slating from a critic the night before.
