A female social worker is murdered while swimming in a remote Northumbrian river. There’s an infuriating lack of skeletons in her closet so there’s no obvious motive. The key could be that she worked on an infamous case where a mother drowned her son in the bath.
Vera cleverly teases viewers with glimpses of what might or might not be clues: Are the bored teenagers loitering by the beach significant? Why is the health club worker so shifty? Do the tears of the dead woman’s boss tell us something? Has Vera’s height at the age of ten got anything to do with anything? Some are, some aren’t but the theme of water runs throughout.
