Long Lost Family

Series 2 - Episode 2

Alison Graham

When she was 14 Maureen’s adored brother Michael, then 21, left home after a family argument. Maureen was told nothing, only that she was never to speak of Michael again. Her mother removed photographs and mementos and Michael was erased from the family. But Maureen always harboured love for her sibling and it was only when her mother died that she learnt Michael was banished by his parents after coming out as gay.

It’s impossible not to get caught up in the search and eventual reunion of Maureen and Michael, and of Brenda and Joanne. At just 19, Brenda gave up her six-week-old baby for adoption after the most cruel of partings: “This woman came in and took her and said, ‘You can go now.’ And that was it.”
