A fascinating insight into a topic I have not seen covered before: why and how some classical singers manage to retrain their voice and change their range. In some cases the decision is forced upon them through vocal injury, but it’s often a case of feeling a bit bored, that they are not being stretched. We learn that it is hard work to achieve, but the results are a charming musical revelation for the rest of us.
About this programme
Christopher Gabbitas examines why singers sometimes have to change the pitch of their voice. He originally began his career as a bass singer, but had to learn to sing baritone after auditioning for vocal group the King's Singers. He looks at how people adapt to performing in another register and the effect the change has. Featuring contributions from opera singers Grace Bumbry and Rosalind Plowright.
