It’s obvious that writer Jed Mercurio wants us to know that Britain’s police are hamstrung by regulation and paperwork. But do the references have to be so lumbering? “That is so many more forms to fill in,” sighs a constable after a burglar leaps from a balcony. The same officer had previously yelled after her partner as he chased said burglar: “For Christ’s sake, Simon, RISK ASSESSMENT FIRST!”
There’s still a promising thriller under here somewhere, if you can get past the clumsy finger-pointing. After passing the point of no return last week, charismatic corrupt cop Tony Gates (Lennie James) tries to turn his back on his weirdly needy and incredibly annoying mistress, Jackie (Gina McKee), and dumps her by Post-It note, which is both heartless and novel. But after a breathy bout of phone sex, he is in thrall to her once again.
