Spandau Ballet’s Gold is the song I associate with the Olympic Games — it dates back to the 1984 LA Games and one of those super BBC montages encapsulating the highs (Daley Thompson’s decathlon triumph) and lows (Steve Ovett’s debilitating illness) of that great sporting event.
In today’s Radio 2 blend of words and speciallyz written songs inspired by the history of the Olympics, the pre-war competitors being celebrated may not be as well known as current athletes, but if you stick with the series, one of your heroes will surely turn up.
