Theatre folk talk a lot about the bravery needed for their job: BBC1’s arts strand returns with the tale of a production that needed more than most. Last year a West End producer brought together a group of injured service personnel. The idea was to mount a play charting their experiences in Afghanistan, and film-maker Chris Terrill (who made Royal Marines – Mission Afghanistan) followed the tricky process of devising and rehearsing the show.
It’s a remarkable look at how to turn the most extreme experiences into art. One soldier/performer notes drily of the approaching first night, “It’s a lot easier to storm a compound.”
About this programme
Alan Yentob begins another run of his arts documentaries by going behind the scenes of The Two Worlds of Charlie F, a stage play performed in January by a cast of former front-line soldiers - some of them amputees, some suffering from post-traumatic stress and one with a serious brain injury. The film follows the production from rehearsal room to performance, as the soldiers join forces with a professional theatre company to write and perform a play based on their experiences of conflict in Afghanistan.
