The star of this episode barely speaks. His name is Ernest, he’s 93, and he has been knocked over by a hit-and-run driver. He’s fit for his age – he was walking the two miles to pick up his pension when he was knocked down – but has serious injuries to his head and pelvis.
Poignantly, Ernest says the same thing over and over to the medics who swarm around him. “I want to fall over,” he keeps saying. “Let me go now.” But they don’t, and even when his heart stops, they manage to resuscitate him. It’s another moving instalment with striking reflections from the staff on how an older generation deals with pain.
About this programme
7/14. A 93-year-old man is brought in with life-threatening injuries after being knocked down by a hit-and-run driver just outside the hospital. He goes into cardiac arrest, and a consultant must keep his heart going manually in a bid to save his life. Meanwhile, an 83-year-old's finger is mangled by a machine at his metal-working business, and a 51-year-old man with learning difficulties is treated after collapsing, prompting his elderly mother to wonder how he will eventually cope after her death.
