It’s something of a little gem, this programme — film composer extraordinaire John Barry in a conversation with his biographer Eddi Fiegel in which he looks back on a glittering career that saw him bag five Oscars.
There are some fascinating insights about his early days working with Adam Faith and how he pretty much taught himself film scoring on the teen melodrama Beat Girl. Barry is a terrific raconteur, but beneath the easy-going demeanour there was clearly a single-minded man of steel — he even took on producer Harry Saltzman when he dared to question the quality of Diamonds Are Forever.
About this programme
Eddi Fiegel explores the life and music of John Barry in a previously unaired interview recorded prior to the Hollywood composer's death in January. Barry discusses the particulars of his early career, from his time as a struggling pop musician to his recordings with Adam Faith and his first forays into the film business. He also reveals how he befriended Michael Caine while working on the soundtrack to The Ipcress File, and relives his experience of the 1966 Royal Command performance screening of Born Free.
