Gordon Behind Bars

Series 1 - Episode 1

This is emphatically not a series where Gordon Ramsay tries to improve prison food. As far as he’s concerned, British prison inmates (each of whom costs the exchequer £38,000 a year, he tells us) have it too easy already: they should be made to work more, so his plan is to set up a working commercial kitchen at Brixton Prison, making food on the inside to sell on the outside – starting with cupcakes. Easier said than done.

There are great characters among the inmates he works with, but there are scarily short fuses, too: if you thought Ramsay had a temper on him, wait until you see his prison chefs.

About this programme

1/4. Chef Gordon Ramsay tries to set up a bakery in Brixton Prison, hoping to teach inmates professional catering skills that will help them find employment and stay away from crime after they have served their sentences. He begins by picking his first 12 trainees, but is taken aback by how little they know about cookery. In an attempt to get them focused on the task at hand, he challenges them to cook dinner for the whole prison - even though they risk upsetting their fellow inmates if the meals are not up to scratch.
