Day one in SW19 is when the hoi polloi mix with the aristos. I love it – arrivistes, noisy and vulgar, blazers and fancy frocks, strawberries and cream, champagne and elongated vowels. But, soft, is that Sir Cliff lurking with intent to croon in case of inclement weather? In any case, have the shriekometer to hand as Maria Sharapova can make quite a noise. She struts beautifully on clay but runs like a galloping giraffe on the All England Club lawns. I shall concentrate on admiring the finesse of Petra Kvitova, who I expect will beat Sharapova in the final.
Among the men, Roger Federer will enchant us purists. Andy Murray will emulate the Wolfman, terrify the populace, lie prone with a physician and watch Rafael Nadal and Federer contest the final. The pair have provided eight out of the last nine champions with only Novak Djokovic breaking up the duopoly last year. I shall dust off my straw boater, don my vulgar blazer and quaff barley water.
About this programme
Sue Barker introduces live coverage from the show courts on day one at the All England Club, featuring first-round singles matches, including Novak Djokovic v Juan Carlos Ferrero, Roger Federer v Albert Ramos and Venus Williams v Elena Vesnina. This is arguably the most prestigious and eagerly anticipated tournament on the calendar, with Grand Slam glory awaiting the players who can win seven matches over the next fortnight. Djokovic will get proceedings under way on Centre Court as he begins the defence of the title he won by beating Rafael Nadal last year. The Serb was rarely tested in his opening match 12 months ago, as he won 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 against Jeremy Chardy to book his place in round two. All of the top 16 seeds in the men's draw successfully negotiated the first hurdle, leaving Alexandr Dolgopolov as the highest-ranked casualty to exit, losing in four sets to Fernando Gonzalez. Andy Murray received a rude awakening in his first-round match against the unheralded Daniel Gimeno-Traver last year, losing the first set before overwhelming the Spaniard and winning the next three sets 6-3, 6-0, 6-0. Continues on BBC2.
