Julia Louis-Dreyfus is so good as US vice-president Selina Meyer, a woman who tries hard not to get out of her depth in a job with no job description. The president never calls and even her own staff can’t see the point of her. So she roams the White House with her sweatily eager advisers, trying to launch a campaign for Clean Jobs that no one’s interested in or understands. It’s unmistakeably the work of Armando (The Thick of It) Iannucci and Simon Blackwell, although in tone Veep is more like their film In the Loop. There’s plenty of furiously inventive swearing and the tart jokes are delicious.
About this programme
1/8. Armando Iannucci's satire, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Selina Meyer, the newly appointed vice-president of America. In the first episode, she tries to make her mark in Washington DC by endorsing the Clean Jobs Commission - only to discover the perils of angering the powerful plastics lobby. She then gets further sidetracked when she is forced to attend a fundraising event in the President's place, and more interference from the White House leads to a hideous gaffe. With Tony Hale, Anna Chlumsky and Matt Walsh.
