Only a man comfortable with his sexuality — and the support of his bandmates — would be happy to don a pink satin catsuit in the 1970s and then play live in front of millions of viewers.

This is but one of many fabulous anecdotes recounted by some of David Bowies fellow musicians from his Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars days. Sadly, there is no contribution from the man I most want to hear tell all — Mr Bowie himself.

About this programme

Rock musician Midge Ure marks the 40th anniversary of the release of David Bowie's album Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, exploring the lasting appeal of Bowie's flamboyant alter ego. A fictional alien superstar, Ziggy dramatically altered the fortunes of his creator, but was killed off at the height of his fame in a 1973 performance at Hammersmith Odeon. Includes contributions by producer Ken Scott, celebrity fan Gary Kemp and former Spiders from Mars Trevor Bolder and Mick `Woody' Woodmansey.
