In this edition Griff goes walking. The idea is to explore the routes used by medieval pilgrims to cross Wales on their way to St Davids Cathedral. In the old days you were expected to remain in the area where you were born for your whole life, and if you did otherwise you were labelled a vagrant. Pilgrimages offered the nearest thing to travel and escape that most ordinary people could expect.
Griff does his best to convey some of this using slightly forced jokes and a lot of scenic helicopter shots. It idles along pleasantly but the best bit is when someone falls in a ditch.
About this programme
4/4. The actor and five companions follow the route thousands of medieval pilgrims took from Holywell, Flintshire, to St Davids in Pembrokeshire. They forage for food, face fast-flowing rivers and sometimes walk barefoot in sackcloth as they come to understand the lengths people in the Middle Ages went to for their religious beliefs. The travellers also encounter grand manor houses, ancient churches and relics, while Griff explores how the British holiday has its roots in the observance of holy days. Last in the series.
