Ireland were the first team to be eliminated from the tournament after losing to both Croatia and Spain, but will be determined to go out on a high against an Italian side that have drawn both of their encounters so far and need a victory to maintain their chances of progressing to the next round. Manager Giovanni Trapattoni will be particularly eager to guide his side to a result over his home nation tonight, whom he represented as a player on 17 occasions, before later leading as manager from 2000 to 2004. Irish fans will have fond memories of their last meeting with Italy at a major tournament, when a Ray Houghton goal was enough to secure a 1-0 victory in the opening fixture of Group E at the 1994 World Cup in the United States.
