African writing is often typified by a mixture of the magical and the
grittily real, but there is a growing science fiction scene on the
continent that takes these tropes and spins them in all kinds of
interesting directions.
South African sci-fi author Lauren
Beukes explores how this mix of magic and technology, challenge and
innovation shapes science fiction that questions clichéd views of “the
dark continent”. She talks to District 9 director Neill Blomkamp,
Ghanaian blogger Jonathan Dotse and Nigerian writer Nnedi Okorafor
about how their experiences inform their work.
