The dapper Reggie Yates lurks in the darker recesses of the country’s inner cities, talking to shifty youths in baseball caps and hoodies, trying to get a decent explanation for why teenagers join gangs. Having grown up in a household that often had to rely on benefits, Reggie takes a tough line, but after talking to former gang members he is not sure — even if he admits he’s too stubborn to want to accept he may be wrong.
It’s a thorny subject, but Reggie handles it with a light touch — acting like a wise older brother as he counsels ex-gang members struggling to leave their old lives behind.
About this programme
TV and radio presenter Reggie Yates explores the dangerous world of teenage gangs, and considers whether young people can be adversely affected by their environment and as a consequence turn to crime. He meets two 22-year-olds who found peer pressure and the temptation of easy money hard to resist, but are now trying to turn their lives around. He also visits a rehabilitation scheme in St Helens, Merseyside, where he talks to a former member of Manchester's ruthless Gooch Gang. Part of the Criminal Britain season.
