Every weekday, all around the country, millions of people tune in to “play for something money can’t buy — the Eggheads’ reputation”, as presenter Jeremy Vine frequently reminds us. If you’ve not seen it before, it’s a deceptively simple and awfully well-mannered pub-quiz-style show. But there’s something compelling about those professional brainboxes. Kevin Ashman knows everything about everything, but my favourite Egghead is Daphne Fowler, who may look like a demure pensioner but has a demon brain and tends to deliver her killer blow with a smile and a twinkle in her eye.
