In any other sitcom, the way Modern Family puts its characters on learning curves each week would be cheesy and tiresome. But somehow the show sugars its pills so beautifully that the little family fables aren’t just funny, they’re touching and just the right side of sentimental (provided your sentimentometer is on USA setting).
This week’s sermon is on the theme of control and trust. What actually happens is some lovely comedy business around a football game Manny is invited to play. Yes, American football for the 13-year-old who says things like “Jay, can you steep my tea?” before taking a “morning constitutional”.
