The midwives at Leeds General Infirmary are conductors, cheerleaders and best friends, rallying dog-tired women in labour to go that little bit further. The exhortations, like the contractions, come thick and fast: “Keep pushing, keep pushing, keep pushing!.. you’re doing brilliantly!.. you’ve come this far… darling, I can see the baby’s head, you’re doing amazing!”

Dentists Carolyn and John arrive for their second baby, a boy with potential problems with his palate. And Billie, heartbreakingly young at 16, and boyfriend Ryan watch their son Cody, ten weeks premature, struggle for his life in the special care unit. You’ll be wrapped up in every single emotional second.

About this programme

12/14. A 17-year-old expectant mother suffering from pre-eclampsia has an emergency Caesarean, and faces weeks of visits to the neo-natal unit as her premature baby builds the strength to go home. A pair of dentists anxiously await the birth of their child, which they already know will have a cleft lip, and a man who has only been with his partner for five months worries about the prospect of becoming a father.
