The first joke in this episode is the best, a prime example of Phil’s bull-in-a-china-shop ability to blurt out something hugely offensive to everyone in the room, then scramble comically to save himself. Ah, the trapdoors that snare an unwary husband. After that the episode is more about learning lessons than big laughs.
The main plot involves a divorced local whose business Phil is desperate to win — even if the client (played by guest star Greg Kinnear) has a worrying habit of kissing Claire smack on the lips. The zingers are thin on the ground but even when it’s treading water, Modern Family has a way of leaving us with a pleasant glow.
