An episode entirely of songs by Michael Jackson. Whether it’s a useful tribute is arguable: Glee always tries to pour the essence of what an artist stood for into its themed episodes, but when Mr Schuester tells his pupils that the topic is “What would Michael Jackson do?”, you wonder if they should just randomly sing some of his tunes instead.
That’s mostly what they do, startin’ with Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ and ending with a version of Ben that will make you hoot and spew at the same time. The best bits are at the extremes: a lithe Smooth Criminal backed only by cellos, and a fantasy sequence in which Artie leaves his wheelchair and dances for a furious but quite funny version of Scream.
