To get the most of this episode it helps if you recall the Anthony Weiner affair, a real Washington scandal where a Congressman with an unfortunate surname was caught sending links to risqué images of himself. Something similar happens in Homeland, except the politician in question is named Dick Johnson, causing a good deal of hilarity between Jessica and Brody.
That’s right, Jess and her damaged marine are sharing jokes now. They’re patching things up, playing card games with the kids. All of a sudden it’s happy families. This slots into this episode’s theme, which is about marriage and its place in our characters’ lives: Saul is still trying to stop his wife leaving, and Brody’s fellow hostage Walker is calling his wife’s answerphone just to hear her voice.
And our heroine Carrie? She’s left forlornly wondering about her own future and the price that people like her pay for the job they do. As always, Claire Danes’s sharp, sad, vulnerable face says it all.
