The Hotel

Series 3 - Episode 1

Emma Sturgess

There’s a letter on manager Mark’s desk at the Grosvenor Hotel in Torquay, which says that the water could be cut off. Better hotels than the Grosvenor have gone under during the recession and as the cameras return for a new series, Mark is living in straitened circumstances to make sure it doesn’t happen here.

His strategies include attracting affluent guests and holding events such as a “magic”’ ball. It’s pretty miserable, but the cameras still love Mark, his staff and guests, who give great dialogue. Gary and Rachel have towed a jet ski from Stourbridge. “I love my jet ski,” says Gary, who shows signs of a midlife crisis. “I’m going to burn it,” promises Rachel, mildly.
