My Hometown Fanatics: Stacey Dooley Investigates

Radio Times
Review by:
Claire Webb

Cub reporter Stacey Dooley has investigated sweatshops in India, child soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo and sex trafficking in Cambodia, but this time she’s back in Luton to investigate extremism. It’s not long before (a demurely dressed) Dooley loses her cool when told during a march of radical Muslims: “I think you look naked… Go and put on some clothes.”

Next, she meets the equally extreme and aggressive English Defence League. Giggling over old school photos aside, this is an admirable, bold attempt to hear from both sides and the many caught miserably between.

About this programme

Stacey Dooley explores the prevalence of extremism in her home town of Luton, Bedfordshire. She goes to the heart of the Muslim community, meeting both self-proclaimed radicals and those trying to counter them, and talks to friends from different backgrounds - some wearing veils and others who are fully fledged supporters of the English Defence League movement.
