We’re just going to have to accept that The Mentalist isn’t quite what it used to be. It’s still watchable and well turned, but without the spark of originality it once had and with none of the genuinely dark shadows that used to lurk in the background.
As series four returns, Patrick Jane and the California Bureau of Investigations are called to look into the death of a retired quarterback whose car explodes in a fireball. To catch the killer Jane uses what may be his maddest, meanest and least plausible ruse yet. The best moment comes when Grace Van Pelt brushes off a predatory male with the simple putdown: “I shot and killed my last boyfriend.”
