Starting to worry that Homeland might be slowing down a bit, running out of dramatic juice? O ye of little faith! Tonight it revs up its plot engines and takes the story down some satisfyingly bumpy roads.
Of course, one of the reasons we love the show is that it can move so smartly between really quite touching, emotional scenes (within Brody’s family, say) and the gritty, spy thriller stuff. It’s grown-up. It flatters us. It feels real. But tonight the emphasis is on the espionage as Afzal Hamid, the last surviving terrorist from the compound where they held Brody, is captured in Islamabad.
He is flown to the US where there’s a terrific interrogation scene that has about five different cross-currents and subtexts. Very tense. As is the atmosphere between Brody and his best friend/wife’s lover, Mike. I know they’re big tough marines and everything, but at some point, those guys need to talk.
About this programme
5/12. Afzal Hamid, the lone surviving terrorist from the compound in Afghanistan, is captured, and Carrie and Saul are assigned to find out everything he knows about Abu Nazir's plans to attack the US. But there is a catch - Estes wants Brody to help with the interrogation, claiming he is in a unique position because of his history with the man who kept him captive for eight years. Drama, starring David Harewood, Damian Lewis and Claire Danes.
