Enjoy Frank at his jaw-dropping best in this marvellous compilation. He’s a master at work in a series of TV performances that highlight his unique ability to make a song his own. The first half shows Sinatra at the peak of his powers in the 1960s, with phrasing that turns
a ballad into a magical expression of emotion. Best of all is a rare sight of him in the recording studio transforming It Was a Very Good Year into a bittersweet confession.
There’s plenty of upbeat swinging stuff, too, with a parade of signature hits that exude the style and tone of another era — it could almost be the soundtrack to Mad Men. Later performances offer a string of crowd pleasers including My Way. The songs are punctuated by brief reminiscences from daughter Tina, but it’s the singing that counts.
