First Love

Series 2 - 4. Shaun Ryder

Happy Mondays chief hedonist Shaun Ryder has never played an instrument. But as a boy he loved his nan’s Glenn Miller collection and badly wanted to pick up a sax and blow. Now he has his chance, as he’s given just six weeks to learn how to play Tuxedo Junction before playing live on stage with Jools Holland and His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra.

This steep learning curve throws Ryder back to his childhood as a shy boy – he’s a ball of nervous anxiety as he tries to impress mentor Soweto Kinch. He wonders if he’s had learning difficulties all his life and the focus widens as he looks at different approaches to learning, which may help him get past the first four notes. It’s a rollercoaster ride.
